Keep up the Good Work!

I happened to come across a copy of your publication Islamic Voice recently, and found it to be very good. Please keep up the good work. I am located in Mumbai and wish to become your regular subscriber. I especially liked the coverage of current issues and the Q&A sections where you answer reader's queries. I think there is a genuine need for such a publication in our country, with the recent spate of National and International events, our community is facing a sort of isolation and guilt feeling which comes largely due to its negative portrayal in the Media. This makes many of us feel unduly vulnerable as we seem to have less and less support in the general society. Everyone feels the need for social acceptance and the sense of belonging to a group of like-minded people. I feel your publication would definitely be a sort of forum whereby we can express our thoughts freely. It would also help our Muslim brothers and sisters to learn what other learned people are thinking.

How about a Hijri Era Calendar?

I am getting Islamic Voice regularly and it is being read by the entire family with interest. We are so used to the Christian era calendar that, sometimes, it is difficult to trace our Islamic dates/month. If our months and dates details are available at hand, it will be easy to observe and follow our obligation and rituals. Since Islamic Voice is very popular in Muslim homes, I have a suggestion to include a small column (similar to SALAT TIMINGS) giving corresponding dates of Hijri era with that of the Christian calendar. It will be useful to many of us to observe/practice our obligations attached to each of the Muslim dates/months.

Muslims, Jadoo Tona and Taweez!

I read with interest the articles "Muslims Go Star- Trekking" by M.Hanif Lakdawala and "Insights" - Reflections on Jinnah and A.M.Khusro - by Maqbool Ahmed Siraj in the October 2003 issue of Islamic Voice. In this connection, I draw your attention to an excellent interview with Raja Ramanna published in The Times of India, Bangalore on August 30, 2003. It will help to create a scientific temper in our people. He has mentioned that "ministers and others in government have more faith in astrology than in science and many of them think that their strength lies in keeping large numbers of people ignorant". The notable exceptions in the past have been Jawaharlal Nehru and more recently, I.K. Gujral. It was reported that the latter was not willing to consult any astrologer or fix a time as per astrological calculations for taking oath as Prime Minister but preferred a time suitable to all.

As far as the Muslim community in North Arcot district is concerned, it is mostly the poor and ignorant who consult astrologers, aamils, mantravadis etc, under the impression that they can find quick remedies to their ailments or solutions to their problems Unfortunately "taweez" (talisman) given by "aamils" or "Imams" is in vogue among some people. Moreover, many "aamils" in the garb of pious Muslims, cheat the ignorant people by saying that they cure their diseases or remove the bad effects of spirits with the help of the holy Quranic verses. One can find these frauds having their brisk business mostly in slum areas. Why does not our Ulema raise any objection to this? Publications like Islamic Voice should highlight all this time and again and make the people adopt a scientific temper, rather than live in the shadow of superstitions.

The address of the web site is www.thefruitpages.com.

Who is a real Muslim?

Your news title, "Ahmadiyya Leader in Germany Embraces Islam," (Islamic Voice, Oct, 2003) is grossly misleading and is yet another example of media sensationalism. I consider myself an Ahmadi Muslim. I joined this community of people who consider themselves Muslims in 1993 when I was all of 15 years after learning something of the teachings of this group and after witnessing the tremendous positive changes in the conduct of my parents after they "embraced," to use your terminology, Ahmadiyyath. Like any other practising Muslim, I also observe my Islamic obligations. It is deeply hurting to be told by an esteemed journal like yours that I am not a Muslim because I belong to the Ahmadiyya sect. The question as to who is a real Muslim is something that Allah alone should be sitting in judgment and not fallible people like you and me. I have great respect for your journal because of its generally progressive coverage. But kindly ponder, whether you are doing a great service by denigrating the Ahmadiyya movement instead of focusing on the larger issues facing the community of which the biggest is the question of intra-community unity.
