Settle the Issue of Moon Sighting
'Some posers on Bhatkal' (January 2000) made disturbing reading. It is unfair to ignore the contributions made by the Navayaths to the region. The NRI remittances itself are a big contributions. It is a totally different matter if these are not channelised productively. This is mainly due to the policy of sidelining a community by the racist Forces.

In the January issue, Maqbool Ahmed Siraj has criticised our Ulema, Qazis and Jamaats. He suggests that the action should have been productive rather than aggressive. What is the meaning of accepting apology from the missionary schools when they have derogated the Prophet (Pbuh). Ulemas are successors of Prophets and must not be criticised. The decision of withdrawing 700 children from missionary schools was correct to preserve our Aqeeda amd Iman.
Editor Replies: The letter writer should go through the article yet again. Ulema, Qazis and Jamaats do not find any mention in the piece. The author has used the words 'reactionary' and 'pro-active' and not the one suggested by Mr.Ashraf.
As one who had been working in the UAE for the last five years, I was disturbed to see that your magazine has presented the news about UAE 'Islamic Personality of the Year' award to the UAE ruler in a negative way.
Let me set the record right. First, the UAE is not a Sheikhdom. It is a federation of seven emirates. It became an 'emirates' in 1971. Second, the Award is the third one in series. In 1997, it was given to egyptian scholar Sheikh Mohammad Mitwali Al-Shrawi. In 1998, it was Maulana Ali Miyan from India. In 1999, Sheikh Zayed, the ruler of the UAE was presented the Award. Let me tell you that Sheikh Zayed deserved the Award for his support to the causes like the ones in Kosova, Chechnya, boycott of Israel in 1973 and oil embargo against the West etc., etc., By the way the Award is given by an autonomous body and not by the Federal Government of UAE,
The closest things that can be said is that the Government of Dubai was the one that gave the Award. Finally, Zayed is not the sultan. He is the president and ruler of the emirates.
However, let me appreciate the good work your magazine is doing. I have put the website on my recommended list of websites.

I am glad that Aurangzeb's atrocities are now being disowned by Muslims of India. The destruction of Somnath Temple by barbarian kings was a shameful act. It had nothing to do with Islam. This will be the first phase in building goodwill with saffronites and faternal relations with Hindus.

It's really sad that we are unable to put an end to the confusion associated with fixing Eid days. I feel this problem has its roots in Saudi Arabia as the initiative in such matters has to come from there. Even in the US, places like Washington DC celebrated Eid on Jan 7 as Saudis did whereas other places like New Jersey had it on January 8.
Americans do understand how we determine the beginning and end of a month but we become a laughing stock when we say that we are not sure when Eid falls. Just as we have sunrise and set times calculated and used for determining Salat times, charts having moonrise and set times are available on the internet. They looked correct too. www.moonsighting.com is a good site. I wish we resolved this ugly issue as soon as possible.
