The Unity Islamic Diary 1421 dares to differ from the dominant pattern of modern diaries. It is organized along the Islamic Hijrah calendar which in the case of the current year of the English calendar, begins from April 6. It challenges the convention in more ways than one. An Islamic day follows solar schedule and Islamic year follows lunar schedule. Since an Islamic day begins with the sunset with the Maghrib prayers, each page carries two English dates and a Hijrah date. Such complexities may confound the users for some time but would have to be accepted in the long run diaries have to be patterned after Hijrah year.

Published by Dr C P Habeeb Rahman of the Unity ILM (Information, Learning and Media) Center, Mangalore, the diary is a smart product with immaculate presentation. A chapter detailing 11 principles for successful Islamic living provides an insight into Islamic values for a meaningful life.

First among these is preparing oneself for the paradigm shift in an Islamic way of life. This reflects in the segmentation of each the day into various namaz zones. The 11th principle of thinking oneself as if in battlefield injects dynamism. The capsule of the principles could act as an elixir for a Muslim recharging his inner self at every turning point of the day.

A pioneering effort in producing a diary in tune with the lunar year, the publishers would need to take notice of uncertainty dogging the heralding of the crescent every month. Therefore there is the risk of upsetting the whole date and page arrangement if the lunar month does appear on the predictable lines. No universal arrangement being standard, this remains a grey area for the Hijrah diary compilers. The early pages carrying text of management principles and other useful information are poorly edited. However much of these gets obscured by the stylish presentation of the contents by the Unity Islamic Diary 1421.
