Moon Sighting

This reply is in response to Ahmad M. Kalnadís letter on moonsighting in the December 2000 issue of the Islamic Voice. The word Astronomist is not wrong and it corresponds to the words botanist, geologist, journalist, neurologist etc. However, Astronomer and Astrophysicist are also correct.

It is rather strange to note that Astrology and other sciences have no bearing with Islam. You may know that most the sciences in the universe has had their origin from the Quran.

As regards the error in the graphics of moon-sighting no one can question it as these are with reference to the data supplied by the top observatories in the world, the Royal Greenwich Observatory, London and the Positional Astronomy Centre, Calcutta and thirdly as per the graphics by Dr. Mohd. Ilyas of Malaysia, an authority in the field. Unfortunately no Muslim country is capable of producing an Astronomical Ephemeris that India does. As such there is panic and commotion all over the world in our community each time we go for the moon-sighting. The biggest problem is created by Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries since they depend on a phantom hilal rather than physical sighting of the hilal that is Fard e Kifaya. Saudis often announce moon-sighting even before the birth of the new moon.

You say that the moonset lag was about 22 minutes at sunset time on November 25 in Hawaii. Did you do physical moon-sighting that evening? It is almost impossible to sight the hilal unless the moonset lag is about 50 minutes and that could be achieved first in the Central or West Africa close to the Equator on November 26 evening (See the map). Let us all unite to globalise the Islamic calendar and let us stop throwing stones on others and make efforts to understand the science involved behind the moon-sighting.

Finally Islamic Astronomy involves only the study of the features of the Earth, the Moon and the Sun leaving the other heavenly bodies.

Moon Sighted on Nov. 26

Dr. S. A. Zahir in his article "Moon Sighting for Ramadan" in November 2000 issue has stated that there are no chances of sighting moon on November 26 anywhere in India. But moon was sighted in Kerala, Rippenpet in Shimoga District and some other parts in Karnataka on November 27. Dr. Zahir should clarify this discrepancy.

Islam and Native Cultures

Can Savitri be a Muslim name? Absolutely! Even the very Muslim names like Muhammad, Abdullah, Umar, Siddique, Ali, Fatima were not Muslim names to begin with.

These very "Muslim" names existed prior to Islam, and they could not be called Muslim names prior to Hijra.

Yes, Savithri is a beautiful name and no one should be hesitant to name their daughters "Savithri". In fact names like that will bridge the gap between Hindus and Muslims leading to better understanding.

The author of the article gives it straight "Islam neither foists Arab culture or language nor supports elimination of alien cultural influences unless they are in direct conflict with the Islamic credo" Examples of Indonesia, Turkey, Iran will be followed by UK and USA.

Kudos to the writer!

Appeal for Reconstructing Mosque

The old timber made Zanzira Mosque on the Nancowrie islands in the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar islands is in urgent need of reconstruction. It serves the needs of 20 Muslim families living in this island who face difficulties during rains when the mosque roof leaks profusely. The Zanzira Masjid Committee has decided to renovate the mosque by putting up an RCC structure. The local Muslims are poor and can meet only the salaries of the Imam and day to day maintenance. The Committee appeals to the Muslim brothers to contribute their mite for the purpose. The crossed cheques or Demand drafts could be sent favouring "Zanzira Masjid Committee". An account has been opened in the State Bank of India, Nancowrie branch. Jazak Allah!

Kassim Y. Malim, Secretary, Zanzira Masjid Committee, Kamorta, P.O. Nancowrie, PIN 744303, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Cyberian Blessings

The article "Cyberian Blessings" by Lakdawala makes interesting reading. Indeed if Muslim women could be trained in Information Technology, a lot more could be expected in boosting the economy as well as the women's talent potntial even while ensuring them privacy of their homes.
