Quran Exhibition


Mr. Khursheed Alam Khan, the Governor of Karnataka
going around the 'Quran Exhibition' which he inaugurated
on January 14, 1997 at Darus Salam, Bangalore.

BANGALORE : " The Quran for All" exhibition held here between January 14 and 19 drew a large number of visitors. The exhibition displayed translations of the Quran in various international languages, rare copies of the Quran, vast number of commentaries, objects related with the holy books and Quran based paintings by Abdullah Pookkod. The audio-visual section has put on display Quran on internet, alim package facilitating Quranic studies and Quranic cassettes. Another section explained several scientific concepts unravelled by the Quran and contributions of Muslims to science. The Governor of Karnataka Mr.Khursheed Alam Khan inaugurating the exhibition hoped that such exhibitions would go a long way in removing misgivings about the Quran.

TOP Residential School Hostel Opened UPPALA (KERALA) :

The Hostel building of Shihabul-Uloom Residential School was inaugurated here on January 8 by Union Information Minister Mr.C.M.Ibrahim. The school run by Al-Hasan Educational Trust blends the modern sciences and languages with Islamic curriculum. It is located 32 kilometers from Mangalore in Kasargode district of Kerala at Mangalapady town. Currently 35 students are studying at the school. According to MR. Sheikh Abdullah, Chairman, Al Hasan Educational Trust, the School has evoked overwhelming response from the region and the need for a hostel became imperative. Mr. Abdullah who is a chartered accountant in Mangalore said the Trust plans to put up a library and high school building in immediate future and is looking for resources.
As a feeder institution for residential school, the campus has another school, Shihab English Medium School which has 200 students. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Y.Abdullah Kunhi, Chairman of the Yenopoya Dental College, Prof.P.C.M.Kunhi, etc. Local MLA Cherakalam Abdullah presided. Mr. L.K.Atheeq, Deputy Secretary, Government of Karnataka, spoke on the occasion.

Mujahid Students Conference

TRICHUR: The Mujahid Students Movement (MSM) held its state-level conference here on December 26-29, 1996. Prof. Mushirul Hassan, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islmia, New Delhi who inaugurated the conference threw light on the Muslim backwardness. He said, failure to draw inspiration from the Holy Qur’an and the life of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) were the main reasons for backwardness. Dr. Zakir Naik, President, Islamic Research Foundation, Bombay, presented a talk on "Women’s Rights in Islam". Among the participants in discussion on "One God, One Humanity" were Ranganadhananda Swami of Sri Ramakrishna Mission Hyderabad; Mar Joseph Kundukulam, Metropolitan Magistrate, Trichur Atirupta; and Dr. Zakir Naik.
The conference held sessions to discuss educational and employment status of Muslims, new challenges posed by the globalised media, NIR Muslims, campus politics and Dawah strategies. The MSM has 600 units and a membership of 15,000 in Kerala. The organisation engages itself in Dawah, publication of periodicals and books. It is affiliated to Mujahid (or Salafi) movement of Kerala which started in 1922.

Seminar on Literature for Children in Pune

PUNE : The Haji Ghulam Muhammad Education Trust held a 3-day seminar on Children’s literature from January 3-5. Nearly 2500 children organised a Payam e Urdu rally on the occasion with a cultural tableau on India.

Chief Guest, Qazi Mushtaq Ahmed, Additional Director, Government of Maharashtra urged the children to master their mother tongue i.e, Urdu and take a vow to purchase Urdu magazines. Trust Chairman Munawwar Peerbhoy introduced the activities of the trust. Rasheed Qasimi, Editor, " Ahsas ", regretted the decline in Urdu literature and wanted magazine’s like Khilauna from Delhi to be revived. Mr. Ghulam Haider from Delhi said the partition of India proved suicidal for Urdu. Banu Sartaj from Chandrapur held forth on the deficient planning for the children. Mr Yunus Dehlavi, Editor, Shama, Delhi urged the Children’s writers in Urdu to develop writings which could entice the children with their strong appeal and lucid thoughts. Mahaboob Rahi of Akola said the children’s Urdu literature lacked cartoons and pictures. The cultural programme was guided by teachers Mumtaz Syed, Firoza Abdul Ghani and Zilla Huma under the guidance of Ms.Sheikh Zulekha. "Qatra, Qtra, a book by Qazi Mushtaq, was Firoza Abdul Ghani, and Zille Huma under the guidance of Ms. Sheikh Zulaikha. " Qatra, Qatra a book by Qazi Mushtaq, was released at the occasion. A book exhibition organised under the guidance of Miss Wahida Syed, Librarian, Anglo Urdu Girls High School displayed a large number of Urdu books for children.

‘FLAME’ Programme Launched

PATNA: "FLAME" (Forum for Literacy Awareness and Muslim Education) programme launched here at the conference of American Federation of Muslims from India (AFMI) held here on December 22-23. Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda asked the conference to send resolutions of the conference to him to enable him to take some major decision for the development of Muslims under the framework of the constitution. Bihar Governor Dr. A.R. Kidwai said from now on no government could run without the support of the Dalits, OBCs and Minorities.

Results of Muslim High Schools in Meerut Girls Perform Better Marginally, Boys Lagging

NEW DELHI : A comparative study of Muslim boys’ and girls’ performance in Muslim High Schools of Meerut division by Begum Nusrat Shervani reveals that Girls performed only marginally better in 1996 Board Examinations while Boys receded from what could be seen in 1995. On the whole, 602 girls appeared from six girls and three co-educational high schools managed by Muslims in 1996 against 587 in 1995. Of these 529 or 88 percent passed in 1996, First class was secured by 100 or 17 percent girls. In 1995 too 88 or 14 percent scored first classes. The performance of boys in 1996 was disappointing as the total percentage of passes fell from 90 percent to 75 percent with decline in first classes from 14 percent to eight percent. On the total 282 boys appeared for the 10th standard exams in 1996. 211 passed with 22 scoring first classes. In 1996 the total number of candidates was 276 with 248 passing the exam, 14 of them securing first class. These results pertain to Ismail National High School, Meerut; Muslim High School, Asara; Industrial High School, Saharanpur; Islamiah High School, Deoband; Kissan Agricultural High School, Gopali; Faiyaz High School Bulandshahar; Hanifa Rasheed and Muslim Imdadi High schools at Khurja; Nawab Azmath Ali Khan High School Muzaffarnagar; and Mufeed Aam High School, Gulaothi.
