The other face of Jihad

By Zeba

There was dead silence everywhere. The screams of worried and injured people had died down. No sign of human life, or even human existence on the streets. Maryam looked out of her room window on to the street, gripped in fear. This was a different Sarajevo, not the Sarajevo of her childhood. This new ugliness of life was the result of hatred, anger, brutality, and persecution in the name of religion. This so-called ‘ethnic cleansing’ has torn apart people’s lives, has mercilessly victimised innocent lives. This is the present day life of war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina, a place where Muslims live in fear, insecurity, tears, seclusion, with the memories of a bitter past. Does this really affect any other Muslim? Does any other Muslim feel the hunger, suffering and pain inflicted by the enemy on a fellow-Muslim? Why is it that while one Muslim is suffering for a cause, another Muslim somewhere else is living in blissful luxury? Why have we forsaken our fellow brothers and left them at the hands of the enemy? Will the Muslims ever get freedom?

No more artillery firing could be heard, the panick-stricken crowd had disappeared. Maryam continued to look out of her window-a far-away look in her eyes. There were remains of a dead city, a city torn to shreds over the past few years. But her eyes kept searching the instances of her past. She saw that innocent beaming smile of her eight-year-old sister, Nadia. There was that familiar, affectionate voice of her mother calling out to her. Her father too was there in their company. Yes, theirs was a truly close-knitted family (a blessing of Allah which not every child is fortunate enough to have). A smile broke on Maryam’s lips as she reached out to them. But they were not there. They had long since been dead, all of them. Her mother had been brutally killed before her very own eyes. Nadia too was severely injured in a bomb explosion in the school, that same dreadful incident which took the lives of several Muslim children. But it was not the explosion that took Nadia’s life, she died because she could not get proper medical treatment, she died of hunger. Tears swelled in Maryam’s eyes. She felt helpless. All her happiness, her hopes had withered and now she was all alone, surrounded by bitter loneliness. Just one ray of hope had kept her alive, the hope of seeing her father some day. After her mother was killed, her father was neither heard of nor seen again. Could he be dead? Would he ever return? Maybe someday, maybe never. But Maryam could not give up hope, she trusted Allah. She knew that some day her patience would be rewarded, her prayers would be answered.

The Divine Books

By Tasneem

The Prophets of Allah who were sent by Him to guide and teach mankind about the right belief and conduct in life, and at the same time to warn mankind of the obvious consequence of destruction if the ordained way of life is continuously disregarded.

Allah’s love for his creation is as infinite as His might and power. Therefore He does not leave us in confusion which arises from not knowing the proper order of things. So He has guided mankind. In addition to Prophets, the second source of guidance from Allah are His Books. From time to time Allah sent Divine Books through revelation to His chosen Prophets. Revelation means gaining or obtaining any knowledge through Divine inspiration-that is, any knowledge coming straight from Allah. Angel Jibreel was chosen to perform this unique task of bringing the revelation from Allah. Altogether four Books were revealed by Allah. These books were:

Taurat revealed to Prophet Moosa (Moses)
Zaboor revealed to Prophet Dawood (David)
Injeel revealed to Prophet Isa (Jesus) (Peace be upon them.)
Holy Qur'an, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)
Except the Holy Qur’an, all the other Books were destroyed, lost or new things were added to it and today, the three other Books do not exist in their original form. The Holy Qur’an is the only book in its original form. No one can destroy it because Allah has promised to protect it.
The Holy Qur’an, being the only Book of Allah, enjoys the privilege of being the most respected book in the world. It was revealed in the Arabic language which is the most enriched language in the world. It is a language in which the term Allah always remains singular and does not have feminine term for it.
The language of the Holy Qur’an is not only rich by its style; it is unique and the treasure chest of knowledge there in can never be equalled by any other, and no one has been able to write one like it though Allah has challenged people to do so.
The Holy Qur’an has 114 chapters which are known as Surah divided into 30 equal parts, known as juz. The longest Surah is Surah Baqarah while the shortest Surah is Surah Ikhlas.

The Dynasties

The Seljuk Dynasty
(Iraq-1038-1194)

The Seljuks, scions of a Turkish chieftain of the same name, joined the Qara-Khanids at Bukhara where their influence also grew. Two brothers Tughril Beg Muhammad and Chaghri Beg Daud, wrested Khurasan from the Ghaznvids Masud in 1040 AD. They deported his descendants to India. They also occupied Central and Western Persia, drove out the Buyids, and ultimately in 1055, destroyed the 110-year old Buyid hegemony over the Abbasid Caliphate, and occupied Baghdad. With the coming of the Seljuks, who were Sunnis, a new institution, the Sultanate was created. The Caliph Kaim gave Tughril the title of "King of the East and West" and delegated the running of the Sultanate to him. Thus the political unity of the Abbasids were re-established under the Seljuks.

The reign of Malik Shah (1073-92) who succeeded his father Alp Arslan, marked the fullest expansion of Seljuk power. Under the fourth Sultan Berkyaruk (1095-1104), the Empire began weakening with many princes acquiring autonomous power. Though they dealt effectively with Byzantine power in the early years, by 1100 they were unable to stave off the Crusaders.

The last Seljuk Sultan, Tughril II, was defeated and killed at Ray in 1194 by Khwasaju Shah.
