From Here and There

It was a unique event for the doctors and Para-medical staff of Mediscope Hospital in Bangalore. Mediscope organises such events twice a year, once during the Independence Day and another on Gandhi Jayanti day. The Mediscope Hospital has been organising many such camps in Bangalore for the last eight years.


This time, they distributed brochures a week prior to independence day in and around the surroundings of the hospital and in Pillana Garden and Tannery Road locality in particular which are very thickly populated with people below poverty line. Here the Free Eye Check up camp was held on Independence Day. Dr. Shafi and Dr. Imtiyaz, both Opthamologists were given the responsibility to handle the camp and were supported by the nursing and administrative staff of the hospital.


Nearly 300 people registered for the free Eye Camp. People came with the expectations of getting a free lens implant, cataract operations and optical lenses and frames. A senior nurse of the Mediscope Hospital, Merry Dayalan said: “the response for the camp is just overwhelming and this time it is certainly more than what we had in the last camp”. Seetamma, an aged old lady said: “both the doctors examined me and advised me to take spectacles for the sight to be very clear, I have taken the advice of the doctors positively”. Yet another patient, V. Muniswamy aged 70 years said: “ I already have a lens implanted in my right eye, now my visibility in the left eye has become very weak so the doctors have advised me to change the spectacle and I will go by their advice”. Another junior nurse, Anita said: “I feel that I am at service in giving sight to the people who have a problem.” Dr. Mohd. Mohsin Pasha, Medical Director of Mediscope said: “As a proud citizen of my country, I am prompted to organise such camps. I have been doing this for the last eight years. During the last Gandhi Jayanti day we screened nearly 2000 people and distributed 500 opticals free of cost. The Hospital is doing it voluntarily with no support from NGOs or the government. For the Independence Day ,we confined to an free eye check-up camp, but on Gandhi Jayanti this year, we intend to distribute free glasses and organise general check-up.”.

The Muslim Library has completed 95 years of service and has stepped into the 96th year of its existence. The Muslim Library is situated in its own two storied building at No. 8, adjacent to Yejman Mohd. Ali Hall, Veerapillay Street (Jumma Masjid Road Cross), Shivajinagar, Bangalore. It is governed by the Muslim Library Trust, Bangalore which takes care of all its requirements and needs. A unique organisation of its kind, the Library is equipped with the holy Quran, translation and tafseer of the Quran in easy Urdu, English and Kannada languages. Ahadith and translations of Hadith, biographies of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) Imams, life and work of great Sufi saints/scholars/scientists of Islam, old, rare and new books on Islamic history, general history, role of Muslims and their great contributions to the Independence of India, Islamic literature and great works of Urdu prose and poetry. It all started in the year 1912 by few like-minded people of the community. Their vision was to make the world of young and growing generation of Muslims to understand their religion in the true sense.


In the general body meeting held on July 2006, Mr Qamar Khader Hussain and T. J. Afzal Baig were elected as President and Secretary respectively, of the Library for the years 2006-2008.
