Waiting for Divine Justice
By M. Hanif Lakdawala

As the verdict in the March 12, 1993 bomb blasts is out, its time for the Muslim community to introspect seriously.

The verdict in the March 12, 1993 bomb blasts, which were described by police officers in charge of the investigations as retaliation to the riots, is out. Instead of introspecting, the Muslim community is asking: “what about justice in the Mumbai riots of December 1992-January 1993”?

Special public prosecutor in the blasts case, Ujjwal Nikam, dismissed these comparisons, saying that convictions are difficult in riot cases because it is hard to trace the accused. His views are not borne out by facts.

Muslims must have faith in Allah. Only he can give justice. In Surah Al- Baqarah, Verse 218, Allah says, “Those who believed and those who suffered exile and fought (and strove and struggled) in the path of Allah, - they have the hope of the Mercy of Allah: And Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. Thus, except Allah, no one is capable of giving justice.”

Going as per the verdict and also the confession in the court in full glare of the media, it is time the Muslims recognised the fact that a small section within the society had fallen victim to the terrorism trap laid by the international agencies. First it was the Mumbai blast in 1993 under the pretext of Babri Masjid demolition, then a series of blasts under the pretext of Gujarat riots.

It is high time the community must take the stand, which is crystal clear in the Quran: “And be kind to him who follows you of the believers. But if they disobey you, then say: Surely I am clear of what you do” Al- Shura, 216- 217. The judgement on the Mumbai blasts has confirmed that it was Muslims who killed innocent people all in the name of taking revenge for the 1992-93 riots. Same reasons are given by so-called jihadi organisations justifying the series of blasts in Mumbai as revenge for Gujarat riots.

What does the Quran say about taking revenge? Allah says in Al- Maidah, 27- 30: “And relate to them the story of the two sons of Adam with truth when they both offered an offering, but it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other. He said: I will most certainly slay you. (The other) said, Allah only accepts from those who guard (against evil). If you will stretch forth your hand towards me to slay me, I am not one to stretch forth my hand towards you to slay you, surely I fear Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Surely I wish that you should bear the sin committed against your own sin, and me and so you would be of the inmates of the fire, and this is the recompense of the unjust. Then his mind facilitated to him the slaying of his brother so he slew him; then he became one of the losers”.

What did Allah say to Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) when he was injured in the Battle of Uhud? Prophet had said, “How could those people be in peace that injured their Prophet?” In Surah Al-Imran, Verse: 128-129, Allah replied, “You have no concern in the affair whether He turns to them (mercifully) or chastises them, for surely they are unjust. And whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is Allah’s; He forgives whom He pleases and chastises whom He pleases; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful”.

Those who kill innocent in the name of jihad are in fact going against the very teachings of Prophet Muhammad. In India, a vast majority still do not know anything about Islam. We must open our hearts to them.

Conference on Indo-Arab Ties

An international conference on Indo-Arab relations is being organised jointly by Indo-Arab Economic Cooperation Forum and Institute of Objective Studies, New Delhi on November 13-14, 2006.

The conference would build on economic and cultural relations between India and the Arab world for centuries, to forge new ties based on trade and investment. It will examine new fields of cooperation in education, industry and healthcare.

Arab dignitaries from government and private sector will participate in substantial numbers. Their delegates would include ministers, important businessmen, academics, bureaucrats and corporate leaders. The Indian side too would be represented by the same class of people.
