UN to Monitor Defamation of Islam
Geneva

The United Nations’ Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution to monitor defamation of religions, particularly Islam. The voting on the resolution took place at the 61st session of the UNCHR in Geneva, Switzerland. Thirty-one countries voted in favour of the resolution, 16 voted against and five abstained from voting, says newsportal rediff.com. United States, United Kingdom and Israel voted in the negative. Russia and China voted in favour of the resolution. India was among those who abstained. The resolution was pushed forward by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Conference. According to this resolution, the Special Rapporteur of the UN will “examine the situation of Muslims and Arab people in various parts of the world, the discrimination faced by them with regard to access to justice, political participation, respect of cultures, physical assaults and attacks against their places of worship, cultural centres, business and properties.” The Special Rapporteur will submit a report on this issue next year and give recommendations to improve the situation. The OIC pushed this resolution alleging “discrimination against Muslims in the aftermath of the September 11 attack in America.” It said, Islam was continuously targeted and defamed by many countries, individuals and the media at several fora, including the United Nations.

Punishment for Camera-Phone Misuse
Riyadh

Saudi Arabia proposes to introduce a law whereby anyone found circulating or distributing pornographic material through camera-phones will be liable to be punished with 1000 lashes, a 12-year jail term and a fine of Saudi Riyals, one lakh. The stringent Saudi law comes following a Saudi court pronouncing a sentence of 1200 lashes each to three accused who filmed a rape scene and distributed the pornographic footage through camera-phones.

Standard Publication Level for Quran Urged
Lahore

The Punjab Quran Board has recommended that translation of the Quran rather than the Arabic text be used on invitation cards, calendars, wedding cards and the chadors offered at graves in order to avoid the possible desecration of the divine words. The Board made this recommendation last month at a meeting held at the Aiwan Awqaf here in which leading religious clerics and officials participated.

Religious leader, Mujeebur Rahman Inquilabi pointed out that since invitation and wedding cards, calendars etc, are carelessly handled, there are possibilities of desecration. Board member Maulana Abdur Rauf said the translation of the Quran is not considered as holy as the Arabic text and therefore minimises the scope of sacrilege while outlining that even then proper care must be taken to see that the divine scripture does not suffer any disrespect. He also appealed to the Government of Pakistan to set benchmark for the standard publication level for the Quran and preparation of authentic translation. The members were informed that the Government would be moving a bill to ensure standards in publication of the Holy Quran in the Pakistan National Assembly.

Saudi Women Waitresses
Riyadh

Three Saudi women have valiantly withstood social stigmas and defied traditions when they started their jobs as waitresses in a five-star hotel in Jeddah recently.

Ameera, Awatef and Amna are the first Saudi waitresses. All three were students at Abdul Latif Jameel Fund (ALJ) for Training and Development, majoring in housekeeping. After graduating with 13 other Saudi women, they were guided by ALJ to the five-star hotel where they were accepted after an interview. They work on shifts of nine hours a day and have a weekly day-off. “My father passed away when I was very young and my elder brother raised me. He and my mom were very supportive and trusted that I would stick to my Islamic values no matter where I worked,” said Ameera. “This job is not considered a disgrace. A disgrace is when a family is poor and in need and the girl is a burden to her family,” she added. Ameera stressed that the world should see that Saudi women are not restrained. “We are able to work in various jobs within our Islamic boundaries.”

Film debunk myths against Islam
Karachi

A new Hollywood film titled ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ is likely to debunk several myths about Islam and Muslims from the Western mind. The $ 130 million film portrays the history around the third crusade in 1187 in which Islamic commander Salahuddin Ayyubi defeated the joint Christian and European army led by King Frederick of Germany and recaptured Jerusalem and declared general amnesty against Christians.

Syrian actor, Ghassan Massoud plays Salahuddin, while the film is being directed by Ridley Scott. Other actors include Orlando Bloom and Liem Neeson. Massoud says the film carries the message that the Middle East crisis could be solved only through diplomatic negotiations rather than war.

Ruling on Forced Marriages
Jeddah

Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who heads the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars, has come out strongly against the practice of forcing women to marry against their will while calling for the imprisonment of violators.

The grand mufti’s call evoked positive reaction among women in the Kingdom, who greatly welcomed the move, saying it was a “wake-up” call. They also hoped that a mechanism would be set up to monitor and help those who come out against such practices. “Forcing a woman to marry someone she does not want and preventing her from wedding someone she chooses ... is not permissible,” the grand mufti said. “Anyone who insists on forcing a woman ... to marry against her will is disobeying God and His Prophet (Muhammad),” he said. Fatin Bundagji, director of Women’s Empowerment and Research at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed the Fatwa.

Anti-Prophet Priest in Court
Stockholm

A top Muslim scholar said the minority would abide by the Swedish law in confronting a Christian preacher who insulted Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh)), urging his fellow Swedish Muslims not to take the law into their own hands or commit any violent acts to avenge the repulsive remarks of the Christian cleric.

“We beg those who threatened Runar Sogaard, in the name of Islam, to let Swedish law judge between him and us,” said Hassan Moussa, the head of Sweden’s council of imams.

Evangelist preacher Runar Sogaard, in a sermon at Filadelfia church in Stockholm, recently, repeated claims against Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) saying the Prophet was “a confused pedophile” since his wives included a girl aged nine years old, alluding to the Prophet’s wife Aisha (RA).
