The Legend of Rumi

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Book University has published several books on the great spiritual and cultural heritage of India, conforming with Bhavan’s sublime philosophy of “let noble thoughts come to us from every side.” So it was entirely appropriate for the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan to publish the book, The Legend of Rumi-The Great Mystic & The Religion of Love, authored by Dr. K. Hussain, Hon. Secretary of Salar Publications (Bangalore) (The Daily Salar and Salar Weekly).

This book which was released in Bangalore last month, on the legend of Jalalu Din Rumi is pleasant news for many reasons, not the least being that it comes from Dr Hussain, who has profound sensitivity towards the values of a liberal society.

Jalalu’ Din Rumi was born in the beginning of the 13th century at Balkh in the northern province of Khorasan. The then Persian empire extended from the Ural mountains to the Persian Gulf and from the Indus almost to the Euphrates. There is as the parables of Rumi teach, a universality of all mystic experiences stressing the unity of all religions. Dr Hussain, known for his learning, and liberal views on many social issues has brought out this book comprising of parables and stories of Jalalu Din Rumi, which is considered to be a world classic. Rumi possessed the intellect of a philosopher, the heart of a humanist, the soul of a sufi, the pen of a poet and the vision of a reformer. Out of the five sections in this book by Dr K. Hussain, one section deals with the religion of love, the second with the immortal parables and the third with fabulous stories. The author has done a marvellous job in presenting the core of Rumi’s massive work.

In an age of scientific and technological marvels, by reminding about the legend of Rumi who stood for the sublimity of the soul, the author has done a great service to the English knowing public and youngsters who cannot read either Urdu or Persian. There are many gems from Rumi like this one in the book, so it is worth to pick it up and treasure it for all times.

Falsafi ko bahas kay andar
Khuda milta nahin
Dore ko suljha raha hai
Per sira milta nahi!

(A philosopher cannot find God through arguments and learned discourses, though he is trying to unravel the philosophical knots of the dialectical world).
