High-Level Committee Meets Muslim NGOs

The government of Karnataka conducted a door-to-door socio-economic and educational survey of minorities during 1994. At that time, it was found that there is a visible awakening among the Muslims and they have started setting up their own educational institutions and participating in diversified economic activity.
A high-level Committee, appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and headed by Justice Rajindar Sachar, to study the socio-economic and educational status of Muslims in the country, held a four-day consultation with Muslims from the State, last month.
Co-ordinated by the Karnataka State Minorities Commission, the Committee met many NGOs, women’s social welfare organisations, members of the Wakf Board and many prominent Muslims in Bangalore.
The women’s groups put forth their points, mainly on the pathetic state of Urdu schools, the need for English in Urdu schools starting from the first standard and anganwadi centres.
The representatives of the public who appeared before the Committee felt the government should recognise the activities of the Muslim self-help groups and NGOs by awarding government contracts including tailoring and manufacturing of school uniforms for government schools.
Those who met the Committee outlined the need for reforming the affairs of Wakf properties and assets so that poor Muslims are benefitted. “Women’s representation should be ensured in all the Wakf Boards in all districts, commissions and corporations meant for minorities, OBCs and Muslims,” said member-secretary of the Committee, Abusaleh Shariff. According to Justice Sachar, there was lack of awareness on the various government schemes meant for the community.
The Committee is touring all the States to collect feedback from the Muslim community. “We met people from all spheres of life and have taken in their demands. We will submit our final report in June 2006 to the Prime Minister,” said Justice Sachar.
