The Violent Side of Video Games
By Emily Sohn

Kids are often addicted to video games. If you watch lots of violence, you may start to think the world is a bad place.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with video games.

I saved my allowance to buy new games every month. I read Nintendo magazines for tips about solving the Super Mario Brothers adventures. I played so many hours of Tetris that I used to dream about little blocks falling perfectly into place.

There were physical effects, too. My thumbs turned into machines, quick and precise. During especially difficult levels of play, my palms would sweat. My heart would race. Id have knots in my stomach from anxiety. It was the same feeling Id sometimes get from watching scary movies or suspenseful TV shows. Playing video games can take over your life.

After a while, I started to think that looking at screens and playing games all the time might be affecting me in ways I didnt even suspect. It turns out that I was probably right.
Scientists are discovering that playing video and computer games and watching TV and movies can change the way we act, think, and feel..

Violence is one of the biggest concerns, especially as computer graphics and special effects become more realistic. Some parents and teachers blame school shootings and other aggressive behavior on media violenceas seen in TV programs, movies, and video games. If youve ever watched young children watching kickboxing, says child psychologist John Murray of Kansas State University in Manhattan, within a few minutes, they start popping up and pushing and shoving and imitating the actions. Theres also evidence that people become less sensitive to violence after a while, Murray says. In other words, you get so used to seeing it that you eventually think its not such a big deal.
Then theres the mean world syndrome. If you watch lots of violence, you may start to think the world is a bad place. I still sometimes have trouble falling asleep if I watch the news on TV or read the newspaper right before going to bed. To try to make the link between seeing violence and acting violently, Murray is looking for clues in the brain.

In his most recent study, eight boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12 watched a series of video clips. Some clips showed violent fighting scenes of Sylvester Stallone from the movie, Rocky IV. Other clips were full of action, but no violence. Others were just blank screens. During the experiment, each kid had to lie down inside a special brainimaging machine. Such a machine takes pictures of the brain and shows which parts of the brain are working at different times.

Murray and his colleagues found that exposure to violent video clips activated the amygdala, a thumbnailsized area in the brain. The right side was particularly active.

The amygdala is best known as the fight or flight organ. It senses danger and prepares you to either go to battle or run away. Your breathing slows down. You become hyperaware of movements in the environment. And blood rushes to your brains core, among other effects. If someone drops a snake in front of you, most people . . . gasp, Murray says. Thats actually the amygdala responding.

Most of the research has focused on TV and movie violence, mainly because TV and movies have been around much longer than video games, says psychologist Craig Anderson of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In his own research and in analyses of research by others, Anderson says that he has detected a connection between violent video games and violent behavior. He has found that people who repeatedly play violent games have aggressive thoughts and become less helpful and sociable. Physically, their heart rates accelerate.

Video games might have an even more powerful effect on the brain than TV does, Murray says. Players actively participate in the violence. In games like Grand Theft Auto 3, for example, the goal is to kill as many people as you can. The more violent you are, the more points you win. Next time you play a violent video game, Murray suggests, check your pulse just before and after each round as one way to see how the game affects you. Ninetynine percent of the time, Ill bet your heart rate will have increased rather dramatically while playing one, Murray says. This indicates that . . . you are being affected.

Three teenagers from Puerto Rico have data to back up that observation. At the International Science and Engineering Fair in Cleveland, Wildaliz Arias Perez, Derek Mercado Rivera and Jacqueline Velez Gonzales presented a study looking at how video games affect people.

With the help of a school nurse, the high school seniors found that people of all ages showed a rise in blood pressure and heart rate after playing the super violent game Capcom vs. SNK Pro. Playing Super BustAMove 2, an active, nonviolent game, did not have the same effect.

Kids in Puerto Rico are addicted to video games just like in the United States, Derek told me, and he worries about the consequences. So many kids play all day, like more than 4 hours, he said. (Source Science News for Kids)
The Shepherds Treasure
By Khushthar Jamal
Once Shah Abbas, the king of Persia lost his way while hunting. At a distance, he heard the sound of a flute being played melodiously. Enchanted by the tune, he followed the sound until he came upon a shepherd, grazing his flock of sheep. The king was pleased with the shepherds frank manner and decided to take him in his court to give him a formal education.

The shepherd had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and soon he became a man of great merit. The King gave him the name of Ali Bey and made him his Grand Treasurer.

Ali Bey possessed extraordinary virtues. His conduct at the court was beyond any blame. He won the trust of the monarch. He exercised great caution in discharging his duties of a Grand Treasurer. He was generous towards strangers, and kind towards the poor.

The affection showered by the King on his Grand Treasurer excited the jealousies of other courtiers. They filled the ears of the king with wicked tales and attempted to make the king suspicious about him. But, Shah Abbas never believed these accounts against Ali Bey.

A few years later, Shah Abbas died and Shah Saifi became his successor. The new monarch was suspicious by nature, cruel and greedy, and trusted every false tale that was carried to him. He was told that Ali Bey had hoarded wealth stolen from the Royal Treasury.

Shah Saifi decided to find out first hand about the truth on this matter. He decided to inspect his Treasury, and found that Bey had maintained a meticulous account of valuables entrusted to his care by the previous monarch, and he could be faulted on no count. He accompanied him to his house. But, to his great surprise there was nothing to confirm his suspicions. He was about to leave when a courtier pointed to him a heavy wooden door locked by two iron bars.

He ordered Ali Bey to open the wooden door. Ali Bey appeared embarrassed but recovered himself quickly and said Lord, in this room, I keep what I cherish the most and it is my own property.

The suspicious monarch ordered him to open the door, which Ali Bey did with great reluctance. But, the monarch was greeted with blank walls and in the corner over a wooden table, he saw a shepherds staff, a flute, a poor cloak and his bag.

O King, said Ali Bey with great modesty. When I first met Shah Abbas on the mountain tending to my flock these were my only possessions. Let me take them to our peaceful valleys, where I was happier in poverty than ever in your magnificent court. He took off the fine courtly robes, and put on the shepherds cloak, and carrying his staff, bag and flute, took leave of the astonished King and courtiers and went outside the house playing a melodious tune. His face beamed with a rare happiness.

Hoppity the Wise Chef

Furry Feathery Tales

Hoppity, the baby Hedgehog, shows us how knowledge rescues us when we are in a crisis. Hoppitys story is also about millions of kids around the world who need to be accepted as they are, by parents and friends.

Hoppity was a baby hedgehog who lived with his mama and papa in a farm in a village on the banks of the Hornby river. Hoppity was very shy and loved to stay indoors and read books rather than hop around in gardens looking for beetles and bees like other hedgehogs. His mama would coax him to go out and play with other hedgehogs in the neighbourhood, but Hoppity was happy as he was, reading books in his aunts library. And what books Recipes How tomake bread pudding and beetle pie The other hedgehogs teased him calling him a sissy and waved ribbons at him calling him girlie, girlie. Hoppity at times felt sad when they made fun of him and laughed at him, but he nevertheless continued with his reading.

One day, at the peak of summer, the village was hit by an acute shortage of beetles and wormsthe usual food of hedgehogs. Grumpy, the head of the hedgehogs, who behaved like Mr Knowall and bossed over, called a meeting of all hedgehog families to discuss this serious issue. Hoppity joined his mama and papa for the meeting as it was compulsory for all hedgehogs to be present.
At the meeting, all the hedgehogs were breaking their heads to figure out how to overcome the shortage of their foodbeetles and worms. Suddenly Hoppity popped his head out and said he wanted to say something. Hoppitys mama told him to keep quiet. What do you know, the whole day you spend time reading books snubbed his mama. But Hoppitys papa said, Let the lad speak.
Hoppityput on his chefs cap ( it also served as his thinking cap) and said My friends, no need to worry, I have ideas to prepare baked dishes like pudding, apple tarts, peanut butter and bread rolls for us. If beetles and worms are not around for us, no hassles, we will eat baked food. I will cook it for you all. I spent a lot of time reading up recipe books and now let me make best use of my knowledge.

Grumpy, the head, was amazed. He was feeling guilty as he had always thought Hoppity was silly spending time reading books. His eyes popped out and he smiled and said Well done Hoppity baby You have rescued us from a crisis. Now all the hedghogs will go from house to house and collect bread, flour, apples and peanuts to help Hoppity make the dishes.

There was a loud applause and everybody came up to Hoppity and hugged him. Hoppity just blushed and quietly walked back to his library to read more about soups and salads Hoppitys mama stopped nagging him about his reading and was very happy, while his papa bought him new recipe books.

Moral of the Tale
We should make best use of the knowledge we gain.
Never make fun of anybody who is different from us.
Parents should accept their kids as they are and appreciate them rather than nagging them.

Amazing Facts Dades Gorge Quarzazete Morocco
By Khushthar Jamal
In Central Morocco to the north of the market town of Boumalne, the fast flowing Dades River has cut through the high Atlas Mountains like a knife through butter. The result is the spectacular Dades Gorge. Its vertical walls are 1,600 feet (500 metres) high, and the rocks lie in horizontal layers of limestone, sandstone and marl. Its depth is 1,600 feet. About two hundred million years ago, sediments deposited on the sea floor were lifted and folded by major earth movements to form the Atlas Mountains .

Each winter, the rain falling into the mountains turn into a trickle to a raging torrent in just a few hours. In one section the rocks have eroded into curious human like shapes.

Faculty of Speech The Honey Bees Buzzing Dance

Animals are not inferior to us because they have a different vocal apparatus nor does the fact that they cannot make articulate speech, like we can, mean that they are contemptible dumb animals. Science has proved now that they do communicate not only with each other, but also with humans at least enough to express their social interests and biological needs. Those of us who enjoy the privilege of a loving and caring relationship with our pets will bear witness to this fact. Modern scientific research by naturalists has discovered quite a few interesting facts in this field. The honeybees buzzing dance is not just an outburst of merriment. It is meant to convey to other bees the location of the nectar with the exact details of direction, distance and, perhaps, the quality and quantity of the find. The insignificant ants wellorganised and industrious social life could not be run without intelligent communication among them. The sonic vibrations made by marine mammals, generally called whalesongs, are articulate communications. Animals and birds in the wild can pass on different kinds of information to each other by slight modulation of voice. The very accentuation in the meow can tell the owner of a cat whether it is requesting, complaining, or saying thank you.

There are numerous legends about the Muslim saints and other holy men who could talk to animals. However, for lack of authentication, they are taken generally as mere fables. There is one statement in the Quran, though, which proves that man had acquired the lore of speech with animals as early as the time of King Solomon. Perhaps in those days human civilisation was more in tune with nature than it is today. The Quranic verse runs like this
And Solomon was Davids heir, and he said O ye people We have been taught the speech of birds... (Quran 2716)
