The True Meaning of Shaheed
By Zaffar A. Shawl

A person who gives his life only in the name of God and has no personal intentions in it, is a soldier of God.

Every Muslim has been asked to abide by the Quran and the Sunnah. When you read the Quran and understand the words of God, you will find noor while reading it. The Quran is the best book to guide you. The holiest word ever seen in the book sent by God is the title given to the brave soldier of truth, dedication, faithfulness and believer….and that is Shaheed. Let us once again go into the world of the Quran and see what Shaheed means. The Quran says, a person who gives his life only in the name of God and has no personal intentions in it is a soldier of God and the Quran guarantees him that this person is never dead, but alive and even enjoys the rizq of God like you. But you are not capable to seek him.

In Khazwa and Uhud, the number of Muslims was less, compared to the armies of Ummayan and Suffiyan. But they won the war, because on their swords, it was written: “We have nothing of our own, no one is our personal enemy. The enemy of God and our Prophet (Pbuh) is our enemy.” This is almost there in every historical book. When Hazarath Ali Ibn Abu Talib brought a non-believer under his sword, the latter spat on him and Ali left him alone. When Hazarath Bilal asked him:” Why did you do it?” Ali replied: “So far, under my sword, there was the head of a person who hated God and the Prophet. But when he did this error of spitting, it became a personal issue between him and me. And the sword of Ali does not take personal revenges”.

We all fight for God, we love for God and hate the enemies of God. The first sayeeda shohada of Islam, Hazarath Hamzah was martyred brutally, even when Hinda ate his liver and tasted the blood of Prophet’s uncle. (as per Bukhari and Abu Dawud). The Prophet cried bitterly and said: “O my uncle, you have given everything for Islam. God will reward you. You will be alive with golden wings till the doomsday. And you will be called shaheed Hamzah.”

Looking towards the history of Islam, thousands of soldiers gave their lives for the sake of Quran and Islam, and God rewarded them with Shahadat. That is why it is forbidden to give ghusl to a shaheed or give him a sheet. His own blood is the holy water and his clothes are the clothes of a soldier of Islam. God will give fragnance to his blood. So, on doomsday, people will know how great those people were who gave their lives for the cause of Islam and its Sunnah. The grandson of holy Prophet, Imam Hussain, while walking on the path of Islam gave his life in Karbala for the sake of Islam and he asked time to pray namaz. That shows how a shaheed loves God and how God loves a shaheed too. People give their lives while performing Hajj, but never did the Imam-e-Kaaba say that these pilgrims are shaheeds, because ghusl is given to them and they are buried in a sheet. We pray to God: “ O God forgive them because they died while performing your Farz.” That is what I have personally heard during my Hajj. But no history can prove that there is dua-e-maghfirat for a shaheed, as God says he is maghfoor and hayat.

Dear brothers and sisters, Quran often says: “why don’t you think.” If we really think deeply, we should know that our body is the total property of God and God himself says, “ I am close as the vein of life to you.” So we should always pray to God to give us the courage to understand Him, the Quran, Prophet’s Sunnah and the life of the Sahabas and to bless us with the straight way as is said in Surah Fateha.

A Tribute to Hazarath Imam Hussain
By Dr Mustafa Kamal Sherwani

Oh! the grand son of Prophet (Pbuh), the saviour of men,
The sultry noon of the horrid summer,
When long back this day, your pious blood,
Fell to the soil in a ruthless way,
Haunts me like a frightening dream.

The arrow, so cruel that pierced the throat,
Of a thirsty babe who could not shriek,
The devilish hands that severed the head,
From your body, the holiest then,
Make me tearful night and day.

One could foresee through your pains,
We would learn a moral so high,
In chain would spring the countless heads,
To follow your spirit in the righteous cause,
Alas! Craven we are, could not do.

We lament your sorrow and cry so hoarse,
You might think, a creed has come,
To hold your banner in the benighted world,
To trim the evils as you did,
Alas! We are a smirch on your name.

Our talks are bold, our hearts are weak,
Our tongues are sharp, our minds are meek,
Our hands and legs are shivery all,
Make us man and give us a call,
Our hopes are shimmering in your grave.

Pangs of conscience ask me oft,
Why the flame of virtue is soft?
Why the sun of evil has its reign?
Why our blood is cold when vice is hot,?
Are we on the brink of death,?

Summon the courage, you all the men!
Tread on the path of martyrs, the great,
Else, the Last Day will see your awful fate,
Your abode will be the dreaded Hell,
With your bones and flesh as its food.
