Guidance for Students

Revision, Time Management and Examination Hall Techniques
By Ameen-e-Mudassar

Its examination time and the entire student community, especially the high school and college students spend anxious moments these days due to various reasons. Inspite of putting the best efforts, there seems to be a great need for them to fine tune their skills during the last 1 month before exams. This is achieved through effective revision and time management.

Why do Revision?

Research shows that we forget most of what we learn after 24 hours. So it is essential for a student to do revision from the books and study sheets at regular intervals in order to have high degree of recall.

· Select a comfortable place to study as well as revise. There should be enough light and no disturbance from kids, relatives, television, music, FM, loudspeakers, mobiles, telephones, etc.

· Your first revision must be immediately after you study, then after 24 hours and then once a week. Have a separate time during the weekend exclusively for revision.

· Before reading a new chapter, rearrange and revise what you have learnt previously. This helps you to compare and study and remember more.

· Spend more time to study tough subjects. Don’t waste time studying what you already know. You must make smart efforts.

· Take up the preparatory exams like your Annual exams during revision.

· Do combined revision studies with hardworking and sincere students. This will help you assess your performance with others. Feel free to clarify doubts with your friends.

Break your Studies – Relax!

Never study continuously for hours together. Rather split the hours into the ratio 40:10:10 which means - 40 min study + 10 min break +10 min of revision using keywords. Psychologists have observed this way of studying helps students to be relaxed and they do not panic during the examination. It is an effective relaxation technique. In the 10 min break, take a walk, read your favourite book or do meditation (zikr) or anything which makes you feel relaxed (except watching the TV, Movies or gossiping over phone or with friends).

Time Management - Time is Money

Every morning, the Almighty deposits Rs.86,400 in our Account. We can use the entire amount. Its our money. We cannot take this money for the next day. Its must be spent on the same day. This is a great gift we receive from him, which is even more than billion dollars. It’s Time. Every day in your account Rs.86,400 (seconds) are added. If you use, its your gain. If you waste, its your loss…forever.

Most of the students have a common complaint. “I am not finding enough time to study. I have to do so many things!”. But unfortunately all of us have only 24hrs to manage all things of the day. A student who gets the 1st Rank and a student who fails, both have just 24 hrs in a day. But why is one a rank holder and the other a failure. It is because the rank student is good in time management.

One of the most popular techniques used by successful students across the world is Divide 4 Rule. In this technique, we list out all the works to be done on that day and then label them with any of the 4 below given levels. This helps us to prioritize what has to be done first, second, then on based on the urgency and importance of the activity/work.

· Urgent & Important

Things which have a deadline. During the last 2 months before exams, completion of syllabus and revision is urgent and important. Any event you must do and cannot avoid.

· Not Urgent, but Important

Things like holiday homework, weekend revision, monthly revision. Its not urgent but very important because if you do not do it, you will lose what you have gained.

· Urgent but not Important

Things which are not important but still you have to do for some reason. For example: Going to market to purchase vegetables is urgent, but its not as important as studies.

· Not Urgent, Not Important

Doing Time Pass things like chatting with friends, spending time over phone / internet or mobile, playing unnecessary games, etc. All these are pure time wasters.

Important points in Time Management for Studies

· Set the time limit for every subject/chapter you plan to study.

· Create a realistic time table to study at least 6 hours every day.

· Follow the time table religiously until your exams are completed.

· Split your study time. Have small breaks (10min) every 40 minutes.

· Know your ability. Do not take more than what you can handle.

· Ensure you sleep atleast 6-8 hours every day.

Examination Hall Techniques

· Relax as soon as you enter the exam hall. Be calm.

· Pray to the Almighty and seek his help. Be positive about yourself.

· Read the questions carefully before you answer.

· Answer easy questions first and then the tougher ones.

· While writing answers, concentrate completely on your answer sheet.

· Don’t get distracted by other things in the exam hall.

· Drink water if you feel thirsty or tensed.

· If you have any doubts in the question paper, ask the examiner.

· Write neatly and clearly. Your handwriting must be neat. Don’t scribble.

· Try using two colour pens. Blue and black [never use red pen in exam].

· You can use black pen for headings and blue for the answers.

· Underline the keywords, important sentences in the answers with a pencil when you have time for checking all questions answered.

· Before you submit the paper, check if all answers carry the correct question number, pages are tightly stapled and no other mistakes.

The Soul of Education
Sir William Haley

Education would be much more effective if its purpose was to ensure that by the time they leave school, every boy and girl should know how much they do not know, and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it.
