Packed with useful information, statistics and articles of interest for both Faculty and Management of various educational institutions, the OMEIAT Journal is now available in a brand new format. Just pick up the Silver Jubilee Issue of December 2005… the cover page including the contents inside reflect an international look. What is all the more unique about OMEIAT Journal is that it is tri-lingual-English, Tamil and Urdu. With P.K.Shabbir Ahmed, Dr. S. Sathikh, Capt N.A. Ameer Ali, Dr. A.M Salahuddin, A. Md Amiruddin on the Editorial Board and A. Shakeel Shaikh as Executive Editor, the Journal will be a trend-setter that focuses on contemporary and positive issues pertaining to education in the Muslim community. One can refer to interesting nuggets of information in many articles-here’s a sample: “The Muslim community in Tamil Nadu, despite being a minority with 6 per cent of the total population of the State, is now a major stakeholder in the private sector education with 27 degree colleges, 12 engineering colleges, 13 polytechnics, 12 ITIs and 125 higher secondary schools”. Through the OMEIAT Journal, sound and practical ideas of education, educational management and career guidance are propagated. It tries to update the community with the fast-changing trends in the field of education. While the journal is of immense value to educational institutions, colleges, schools and technical institutions, any Muslim who cares for the community and desires to know where the community is heading towards at the educational level, needs to read this journal. Books Sold by the Kilo at Jeddah Market
By Hassan Adawi
Jeddah

You may not believe that there is a shop in Jeddah where books are sold by the kilo. The shop is situated in one of the city’s most popular markets, the Sawarikh in south Jeddah. This correspondent from Arab News visited the shop where many old books by famous authors are on display. Books dealing with religious, political, economic and health subjects, in both English and Arabic, are available at surprisingly cheap prices.

Saleh Al-Ghamdi, owner of one of the shops, said that he bought the books cheaply from people who sell them in the market. “We also get books from some government departments. Talking about the prices, Al-Ghamdi said his shop did not focus much on prices, “since we know that no one will buy the books if the prices are too high.” He said most of the buyers were expatriates. Abdul Malik, a Bangladeshi salesman, said, he charged the clients according to the number they bought rather than their individual value. “We sell some books for SR1 and SR2. We also offer good discounts to people who buy in bulk,” he added.

Abdul Malik likes his job since he meets a large number of clients every day, including women and children. “Small children come to our shop looking for cheap story books,” he added. Muhammad, a regular Egyptian customer of Abdul Malik’s shop, said he had bought a lot of interesting and valuable books from the shops in the Sawarikh market.

“Some of the books in this market are not even available in major book stores,” he says.
