To truly understand events in the Middle East, it is essential that scholars, journalists, government workers, military personnel, business people and diplomats familiarise themselves with Arabic/English translations for contemporary words and phrases. Media Arabic-the language of printed or broadcast news items emphasises relatively modern terms that are not covered by standard Arabic dictionaries. From “anti-aircraft missile,” “axis of evil” or “Zionism”, this book lists the top 1000 words useful for understanding contemporary media Arabic. Elisabeth Kendall has taught media Arabic at the University of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh, where she is a lecturer in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

This is a post 9/11 book on Islam. Creative nations always turn their crisis hours into positive moments. This book intends just to set the ball rolling in the right direction. For centuries, we Muslims have been accustomed to virtually living in the past. No doubt our past has been bright, but now it has a deadening effect on us. Desperate to regain the lost glory of the bygone days, we often end up with the romanticisation of the past. For many amongst us, the past has become the only abode of refuge. In this book, Rashid Shaz has tried to demolish that conventional abode-the romantic appeal of the past or fashioning it as an age of no challenge. For copies of the book, contact the publisher.

Biographies make intere-sting reading and what makes P.A. Inamdar-A Living Legend, unique is the fact that the personality of P.A. Inamdar is presented in an unemotional fashion to the reader. This biography is compiled by Mushtaque Madni who is a distinguished writer and journalist among Pune’s new generation of Urdu writers. In 2001, he started a Urdu fort-nightly nam-ed “Usool” with himself as the editor, to fill a void in Pune’s cultural life. A recipient of the Maharashtra State Urdu Academy Award for journalism, his bold writings have won him wide admiration.
“ Inamdar performed a virtual miracle in bringing into existence the Azam Campus which was amazing in its grandeur and comprehensive concept, as it was awe inspiring in its execution. Twenty three acres of prime land in the city of Pune was exploited so imaginatively that it developed into a unique self-propelling educational complex,” says Madni in the Foreword. The book is packed with reflective essays by eminent people who have closely interacted with Inamdar. While Fakhruddin Khorakiwala, former Sheriff of Mumbai describes Inamdar as “profound, pragmatic and positive” in his essay, Prof. Dr. Pa. Bha. Kulkarni, says that in a world polarized by communal tension and religious animosity, Inamdar stands as the voice of reason. Going through this volume, Inamdar comes across as an achiever. Little known details about how the Azam Campus was set up brick by brick, has been well elucidated by Mrs Abeda P. Inamdar in her essay.
