Dr Mohib Hamidi, a surgeon in a local hospital, says, “goats this year have been slightly costlier compared to last year.I bought two for Rs 5,000,” he said..
Three goat markets came up in the city this year. Besides a big goat market at Jagdeo Path, buyers bargained hard for goats at Musallahpur and New Market also. “The animals are priced according to their size and the price ranges from Rs 4,000 to Rs 20,000,” said one seller. At Jagdeo Path, one goat, named by its seller after a famous playback singer, was priced at Rs 55,000. It waited for the customer for a long time. But it was finally sold. Ask Justice S N Hussain if Bakrid is losing religious significance with the costliest goats becoming a sort of status symbol, and he replies in the negative. “It’s just that people are giving Bakrid social colour,” he said.
