The Prophet (Pbuh), gazing into the distant future said that there will come a time when your religion will be like a piece of hot coal in the palm of your hands and you will not be able to hold it.
When asked whether it means that the Muslims will be fewer in number, he said: no, on the contrary, Muslims will be larger in number, larger than ever before but they will be as powerless as foam on the ocean waves.
How strange but true that today, in the entire history of the Umma, Muslims are larger in number than ever before and yet powerless. History records that the most brilliant success is achieved by those who question and analyze the cause of their defeat and failures. This self analysis alone sets them on to the road to victory because the cause of the failure is identified, the solution to the problem is prioritized and more energy and will is focused in implementing this solution. Thus victory is assured by leaving the result to Allah Almighty.
So turning to the cause, our powerlessness is that we allowed Muslim scholarship to stagnate and for the centuries thereafter we continue to defend and protect an unchanging situation in the name of purification thereby losing control of both events and history. History and events now control us. We do not control them nor influence them as the Khulahfa a Rashideen had done.
Prophet Mohammed (Pbuh) said that when Allah Almighty wishes to punish a people he does not remove knowledge from the hearts of the people. Rather He removes knowledgeable people from the people so that people in their ignorance elect ignorant leaders who in turn mislead themselves and misguide others.
The Seerah and the Sunnah became marginalized and the dynamic, all embracing code and status of the Shariah as Allahs divine gift to all of mankind became all but replaced by a divisive theology of the various Schools of Thought. Muslims are now boxed in prison houses referred to as nation states with no say as to who shall govern them, no control over the laws that should apply to them and no benefit from the resources that belong to them. It was and continues to be an error of monumental proportions to treat the Seerah and Sunnah as history when it is in fact a timeless divine model of method, movement and achievement implanted at a crucial moment in history when mankind was, as the Quran says, wa quntum ala shafa hufratim min nanaar, (and you O mankind were) in the abyss of a fiery destruction. This timelessness of the Seerah and Sunnah places the Prophet of Islam above history.
Weakened by such deviation and misguidance, Muslims allowed obscure theology to divert their focus from making the Seerah and Sunnah the chief engine of movement and achievement throughout history. Indeed that movement and its achievement was present in the period of the Khulafa a Rashidoon and formed the basis of a highly moral, ethical, spiritual, rational and scientific civilization that eventually saved Europe from its Dark Age of ignorance and superstition. It brought about an intellectual revolution that Christianity was unable to provide nor to cope spiritually in a new situation. The Renaissance that followed gave rise to Newtonian physics and to the Industrial and French Revolutions.
Armed with great scientific know-how and technology, a scientific truth that is compatible to Islam, the Western powers became attractive to a large number of Muslims students and scholars under the erroneous belief that such compatibility was sufficient a ticket to borrow new ideas from the West and to put such energy and power into their own sagging history and tradition without creating their own intellectual revolution within the paradigm of the timeless Seerah and Sunnah.
If culture teaches us how to think, civilization teaches us how to live. It is not without significance that the leading nations of the West, though high in technology are low in culture and values. In the warp and woof of this cross fertilization Muslims have found themselves trapped within an educational and behavioral framework that can best be described as producing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personalities in that what we do in the mosque is Gods business and what we do outside is our business.
Such disfunctional behavioural traits permeate all sectors and levels of our societies in almost all parts of the Muslim World.
It was Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jailani who said that in the interests of Islam are protected by four classes of people;
1. The Umara or Leaders who look after the people,
2. The Ulema or scholars who guide the people to the Hereafter.
3. The Ghuzat or generals who protect the life, person and property of the people from the attacks of the enemy; and
4. The Ahlal Kasab or businessmen, traders and industrialists who exploit the resources of the world to bring prosperity to the people.
He then poses four questions.
If the leaders become wolves, who looks after the sheep, If the scholars are in pursuit of material gains, who guides you to the Hereafter, If generals are egotistic and in pursuit of personal glory who protects the life person and property of the people from the attack of the enemy, And if businessman and traders cheat the people, how can people trust them.
These four benchmarks demonstrate the state and illness of the Ummah in all parts of the Muslim world.
Let us take an acid test to see how we fare with the rest of the human population.
Demographics: Compared to the World Jewish Population of 14 million, we are 1.5 billion. Every fifth human being is a Muslim. There are two Muslims to one Hindu, two Muslims to one Buddhist and a whopping 107 Muslims to one Jew. Yet the Jews are more powerful than Muslims, why?
It is so because of the reasons below:

Why are they powerful? A: They have Professional and Higher Education
Why are Muslims powerless? A: Because they lack Professional and Higher education.
Why are Muslims powerless? Another reason. In the entire Muslim World (57 Muslim Countries) there are only 500 universities. In USA alone, 5,758 universities In India alone, 8,407 universities Not one university in the entire Islamic World features in the Top 500 Ranking Universities of the World Literacy in the Christian World 90% Literacy in the Muslim World 40% 15 Christian majority-countries, literacy rate 100% Muslim majority - countries, None 98% in Christian countries completed primary Only 50% in Muslim countries completed primary. 40% in Christian countries attended university In Muslim countries a dismal 2% attended. Muslim majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims The USA has 5000 per million The Christian world 1000 technicians per million. Entire Arab World only 50 technicians per million. Muslim World spends on research/development 0.2% of GDP Christian World spends 5 % of GDP
Conclusion. The Muslim World lacks the capacity to produce knowledge. The Degree of diffusion of knowledge is another way of testing the degree of the acquisition of knowledge. Pakistan 23 daily newspapers per 1000 citizens Singapore 360 per 1000 citizens. In UK book titles per million is 2000 In Egypt book titles per million is only 20
Conclusion. Muslim World is failing to diffuse knowledge
Applying Knowledge Exports of high tech products from Pakistan is 1% of its exports. In Saudi Arabia is 0.3% Kuwait, Morocco and Algeria 0.3% Singapore alone is 58%!!
Conclusion. Muslim World is failing to apply knowledge.
So why are Muslims powerless? A: Lack of Professional and Higher Education.
