Two Gujarathi Teachers Show the Way
Maths Lab in Ahmedabad School to turn it into hep, snazzy Subject
By Abdul Hafeez Lakhani

Now, Gujarat Muslim teachers are on the way to do something new and innovative for the students. They may be the trendsetter for many schools and colleges.

If you thought Maths is boring, tough and cannot be made interesting, here is an eye opener for you. The F.D. Higher Secondary School, managed by a reputed Muslim Trust in Jahapura of Ahmedabad is busy making arrangements to set up a full-fledged maths laboratory for its students of class VIII, IX & XI (Science).

The school plans to use mathematical models made by two of its teachers. These models, the school says, will enable students to understand maths better. Close to 50 models will initially be a part of the lab which will be ready by October. The number of models will be increased later.

The models include a ‘Circle Master’ made by Saeed Sheikh, who teaches science and maths at the school. It is made from plywood and has been designed to help students learn fundamentals of maths like radius, chord and diameter in a simple manner.

This is done through the use of nails on the plywood fixed at an equal distance, which is used to determine the circle, its area and its different parts. The models also includes a geometrical board.

Sheikh says, very often, children do not understand theorems or concepts like area through textbooks. It therefore becomes necessary to make them understand through some kind of teaching aid.

For example, I have designed a mathematical model on the Pythagoras theorem. Instead of explaining the Pythagoras theorem, which says that the sum of the areas of two squares on the legs equals the area of the square on the hypotenuse.

I have used three rectangles to explain the theorem, which makes it much easier for students to grasp.”

Yusuf Khatumbra, another teacher, who has developed a mathematical model called “Area Master” says, “the concept of area master is based upon the formula to convert a rectangle into a square. If one cuts a rectangle into three pieces, and if they are combined a square can be formed.

Principal Gena Husain says, that the maths lab will be a new approach in education as far as the learning of the subject is concerned. He says, “This is a way to make maths more interesting and easy for students.”
