A Circle of Light
By Nigar Ataulla
Bringing together 2000 Muslims under one platform is no easy task. But the KPTCL Muslim Employees Welfare Association has done it. Its dynamic members are all set to work for the upliftment of the downtrodden sections in the society.
The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) is a registered company under the Companies Act, 1956 and is wholly owned by the government of Karnataka. Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited is mainly vested with the functions of transmission and distribution of power in the entire State of Karnataka. Based on a government order in February 2002, KPTCL was unbundled and four distribution companies were formed. It is now vested with the responsibility of transmitting power all over the State, construction and maintenance of stations and lines of 66kv and above.
Amidst all this, there was one historic moment and that was the formation of the KPTCL Muslim Employees Welfare Association. The think-tank of KPTCL Muslim employees, the senior retired officers, led by Syed Khader Mohiyuddin put forth the idea in the minds of some of the most active Muslim employees, about forming the KPTCL Muslim Employees Association. Khader Mohiyuddin has been very active in welfare service activities for Muslims for over 30 years now.
It was the 27th of Ramadan, in the year 2003 when few officers and employees of KPTCL wished to form an association and a Trust, for the welfare of the Muslim employees of KPTCL. With the support of hundreds of like-minded officers and employees, the Association was successful in framing the bye-laws and is now recognised as the KPTCL Muslim Employees Welfare Association (Regd) since 14th June 2004.
KPTCL comprises over 40,000 employees, out of which there are 2000 Muslim employees, spread through-out the state. Muslims, categorised as a minority segment are indirectly deprived of necessary representations in various fields like education, employment, politics etc. The KPTCL Muslim Employees Association/ Trust has determined to work towards ensuring the welfare of the Muslims in various fields including education. The Association/ Trust is of the view that, “there should be reservation for Muslims on the basis of their population in all political forums like Parliament, State Assemblies, Zilla, Taluk and Gram Panchayats.
The Association held its first State Level Convention on March 11, 2006 here in Bangalore at the A.K.S. Convention Centre. Setting the perfect tone for the Convention was the Quran recitation, followed by translation of the verses in Kannada. Minister for Labour and Wakf, government of Karnataka, Iqbal Ansari who inaugurated the Convention said that he would do his best to protect the rights of the minorities. The KPTCL Muslims Employees Welfare Association also submitted a memorandum to the minister. The memorandum included the need for political empowerment of Muslims. A Souvenir to mark the first Convention of the Association was also released by the minister on the occasion.
Apart from many other welfare activities for the Muslim community, the Association and the Trust have set up a seminar hall in the premises of Mid Town School in Richmond Town in Bangalore under the guidance of Syed Khader Mohiyuddin and other personalities. Apart from this, the Association/ Trust has to its credit achievements like conducting coaching classes to candidates for selection of various competitive examinations at TAHA Institute. Several seminars have been conducted with involvement from organisations like the Wakf Board, Minority Commission and the Police Department. It has also organised iftar parties during Ramadan and Meelad-un-Nabi gatherings.
